Yup...It is really hard to motivate people financially (as silly as that sounds- it is true)...Bonus based on Net Income is really tricky...sounds great on paper, but like you said it can really backfire. One of my favorites is the old "writeoff from hell" commonly referred to as the "Big Bath"...Hey, if things are looking bad for the forecasted 2 years, with negligible or zero Net Income, might as well have a BIG negative net income, i.e. loss. Take the bath this year(writeoff inventories, "reorganize" etc), and voila! Next year you can't help but show a profit , and hence get a bonus based on Net Income... I swear I have never seen so many "reorganizations" and "one time" charges...

BTW, if you were going to look for books on the internet, doesn't "Books.com" make a whole lot more sense than "amazon.com"? Not only do we have a better piece of real estate, but our prices are cheaper! But the site is nowhere near as good as AMZN's...So......

If Silverman really wants to increase shareholder value, why the hell doesn't he spin off Books.com and Netmarket and all the other "net" assets :) Or why the hell isn't he advertising them on TV? Hell, cyberian outpost, possibly the WORST looking, managed and priced shop on the web has been advertising on TV (and consequently the stock has gone through the roof...TRUST me...when the hype is over [Dec. 26] COOL is going to fall hard and fast...).

Sounds like the infomercials may help- but 70 bucks to join the club...
