NTL - TV-INTERNET OVER TELEPHONE LAUNCHED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NTL has launched its TV-Internet service aimed at those who want to explore the Net from the comfort of their sofa. Even the handset is an infra-red TV remote, with coloured buttons and a keyboard. NTL Internet offers five sections on the home page including Virgin Net which becomes the route to surfing the Net. The account offers up to five e-mail addresses and offers parents control of the content that their children can access and the amount of time they can spend on line.
The box automatically tunes in all available TV programmes and they can be inserted in a corner of the screen while browsing. NTL service is a rental operation at a monthly subscription of 15 pounds. Telephone call charges are 3p per minute peak falling to 1p at weekends (with a minimum 3.5p connection charge) and Internet access costs are 2p, 1p off peak.
In spring 1999 subscribers will be able to upgrade to a box which also handles digital terrestrial TV.
