My experience has been that if you are doing charts, the connection speed is NOT the limiting factor.

But, yes, I am using cable. :) (I used to use ISDN, and before that a 28.8 modem, though.)

The drawing code for tick charts (actually, I use those nifty "time and sales" charts, which are more "challenging" to the system...) has got to be the worst graphics code ever written. I can only imagine that they re-draw the whole darn chart for every tick, and do it the slowest way possible, to boot...
