TR3

Kai, it seems to me you are going to have to drink a lot of that American lemonade !!!! I indeed went to a few local, small and large, computer shops today (made my contribution to Eidos by buying TR3) and saw that TR3 always had at least 3 times more shelf space dedicated to it than Half Life !

In any case, I don't think it relevant to compare such different games !

Make sure you ask Tae Kim for some Samuel Adams beers, they are by far the best American made ones and they are made in the Boston area where he resides.

Good luck.

Thierry

TR3 sales...

Hey all,

For what it's worth, you can see how TR3 sales at Babbage's and Software etc. ranked during its first week:

gamelord.com

Some observations on the rankings...

* On the PC, TR3 is in second, behind Half Life. BUT...

* I think that the numbers are for 11/19-11/25, and TR3 didn't come out until 11/22 or 11/23 (depending on where you are).

Oh, and some random responses to previous messages...

* Someone else mentioned this already, but I wanted to second the point: Playstation sales should be the focus, as they will be much higher than PC sales. (I think someone here or on the THQI thread posted that 200K constitutes a mega-hit on the PC, whereas 1M is the benchmark for consoles.)

* Someone said that only "desparate mags" are covering TR3 -- Huh? Maybe it's because I'm much more of a console gamer, but much as I think Lara's way over-hyped, there has definitely been a ton of coverage about her in console mags (though not as much as Zelda's getting).

* TR3's competition on the Playstation will be stiff -- both within its genre and in general. Within its genre, you've got Metal Gear Solid (considered by many to be the best Playstation game ever, though it's been out since early November), Akuji the Heartless (out in early December, published by Eidos ironically), and Tenchu (which has been out since October, and which is a much different game, though it gets grouped with TR3 as a 3rd person action/adventure game). In general, there's just a ton of good games coming out for the Playstation right now, which is one of the reasons I may not get TR3 until next year, if at all (might just rent it instead).

Anyway, it's still too early to tell, but TR3 seems to be doing quite well so far. Let's see if sales will stay strong through the holiday season. :)

Harry

Hello Tae,
concerning our little bet, I say: We've got a deal!
Regarding the details, I'm still convinced that TR 3 will outsell
Half-life by a ratio of 2 to 1 on the PC version, but Q4 sales seem
to me a little short term. Given all the marketing hype with TR 3, I expect to rank this product at the top 10 for about a year (like TR 2which is still ranked No. 18 here in Germany). However, I know that we can't wait over the whole product cycle of TR 3 and Half-life with our bet, so we can either extend the time horizon to let's say January or February 99 or we should alter the ratio to compensate the short product cycle. What do you think?

-Numbers sold (not shipped) is O.K.; we are speaking about full versions, not OEM-deals with 3D-cards and other hardware, which are mostly only "enhanced demos".

-Concerning the stake, I still think a small barrel of beer is O.K.
(here in Germany the quantity of such "party barrels" is 5 liters).
You can choose between such names as Holsten, Warsteiner, Koenig Pils (which is my personal favourite) or Beck's. At this point of time, I don't know if UPS can handle such a parcel (perhaps they think there's
a bomb inside), so we can think of another item (perhaps something smaller)

I wait for your reply. Until then,

Kai
