DOT, IUNet Sign MoU For Internet Backbone

In line with the recommendations of the National Task Force on Information Technology, the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the US-based IUNet, to form a joint venture for setting up a high-speed Internet backbone network in the country. It is expected to be set up by June next year, as specified by the National Task Force.

IUNet has been set up by the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Mellon University with an aim to design, develop and manage high technology-based Internet backbone by setting up a high-speed data network internationally. Its functions include accessing, educational content from other leading US and other scientific institutions and make them available for Internet surfers around the world.

The $150 million backbone network, called Sankhya Vahini, will initially connect 10 metro cities and more than 100 universities and research centres. Besides IUNet, DOT partners in the venture will include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIIT, Hyderabad, among others....
