My Dad was very liberal in his political leanings---particularly in the 30's thru 50's. Voted for FDR, Truman, you know, your usual suspects. He also landed on Normandie Beach on the second day of the Big D. He also received 2 Purples and 2 Bronzes. My Uncle Moe, still living, was a paratrooper who, prior to joining ( not drafted ) used to jump from tenement to tenement ( 10' lengths between buildings ) for fun. Parachuted behind enemy lines in Belgium to f--k up their communications; busted from Sgt. to Private twice. Stevenson volunteer in the 50's blah blah. Man, what are you talking about?! Lazarre

Pontificating about the military? What I said, precisely, was Yes, Quayle served in the reserves. There was some debate about how he got around the waiting list, and his unit didn't seem to be in much danger of being activated. It was a PR unit or something, wasn't it? Not many people of that age who went to college ended up going to Vietnam. There were many ways out. I think there were maybe 2 players in the NFL who served in 'Nam, and those guys weren't the 4F type. I don't think there's many in Congress who served either, in that age cohort. John Kerry, but he's the wrong side of the aisle again. There was always something. Not many people of Clinton's age who went to college served in Vietnam. A fairly simple statement, but as usual, it was turned into something else entirely by the substantial debate contingent here. A Rhodes Scholarship was far from the easiest way to avoid the draft. No, I didn't serve in the military, Ish. My nephew and godson is graduating from West Point this year, though.
