Mohan

I was born and raised in Bombay so I know a lot of people in various businesses and professions.

As with everything in Inida, the extortion is an open secret. They may say they will do something about it but I doubt anything will come off it.

There is an old story of the politicians setting up ac ommittee to study any problem. But its like going for a shit. They make a lot of noise before dropping the matter.

Meanwhile the people in Bombaya re dressing down everything thereby hurting ALL businesses. No one wants to buy a new car or hold big weddings or parties. The poor shopkeepers (from the very poor on the street to the biggest malls) cannot avoid the extortionist. So they pay and get the money with increased prices.

I have personally seen a coconut vendor on the street who stopped to pay a cop keeping me, his customer, waiting. After the cop left he said " now you know why the prices are so high."
