the releases i read say that mu has to pass certain milestones to get any intel $.
mu does need the money to convert to rdram production. but i don't believe they are very far along yet afterall they just made the deal. mu did announce that they could be in production by next summer.
my earlier post was my own thoughts. but think about it. since the intel announcement, we have learned about a huge potential shortfall for rdram next year. then toshiba and kingston announce they are already shipping rdram to dell. then matsushita announces several rambus based consumer products to be released shortly under their panasonic brand name. then samsung announces spending 150 million to increase dram production 33% right now. then several other dram mfrs have annouced production increases. they have to be imho either trying to fill the shortfall or trying to end run mu or both. excellent business strategy for them. either way we win. if samsung et al are successful right now we win sooner. if they aren't we win big when mu ramps up next summer.
some posters have seen this production increase and probable price decrease as negative. i would agree if rambus was a mfr. but they are not. they just collect royalties on the sales price. if production increases from any angle they collect more royalties = more earnings.
