HEROES

"E-commerce" was the phrase of the day on the Street, as investors piled into all kinds of stocks poised to benefit from this "new" way of doing business. America Online's (NYSE: AOL) decision yesterday to go ahead with plans to acquire Netscape Communications (Nasdaq: NSCP) and form an e-commerce deal with Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) helped get things rolling, while an optimistic story about the sector on the front page of The New York Times' business section today didn't hurt either. Of course, the opportunities presented by e-commerce are nothing new. Still, there's no such thing as too much publicity, especially with the holiday shopping season ready to kick into high gear. With that in mind, Onsale (Nasdaq: ONSL) rose $16 1/8 to $60, Egghead.com (Nasdaq: EGGS) picked up $3 3/16 to $21 7/16, and CyberShop (Nasdaq: CYSP) gained $2 13/16 to $18 5/8 on the retailers' side. E-commerce software maker Open Market (Nasdaq: OMKT) climbed $5 5/8 to $12 7/16 and payment software firm CyberCash (Nasdaq: CYCH) added $4 5/16 to $15 7/16.

I yet to spend a dollar at Egghead. Why? Because their prices are
not competitive. In fact, they aren't even close. Don't take my word for it. For proof, visit shopper.com and do a search on nearly any computer part you want. Egghead is never (in my experience) one of the top three cheapest websites, and is most times amongst the most expensive. I know egghead has name recognition, but the name of the game on the web is price and service. Buycomp almost always has the best price, and I've always liked their service. I don't see how Egghead, long-term, can beat Onsale and Buycomp. I have no stock in any of these companies, I'm commenting solely as a consumer. I use to have stock in Eggs but sold the last time the price hit the mid 20s.
