John Boruch - an executive of Amkor Technology talked at length with WSJ last month about Amkor's business as an independent provider of packaging and testing services to semiconductor companies.

He described Amkor's business as follows: ''What we do is service the semiconductor industry by packaging and testing semiconductors. Packaging means we take the customer's processed wafer, and we do all the rest of the manufacturing and testing, and then send it back to the customer in a finished form or to the customer's customer to be applied to a printed circuit board. We are the largest in the world of what we do.''

He cited the following reasons for Amkor's success: ''We are in a very large and growing market. We are being propelled by an increasing outsourcing trend. We have a strong technology position. We have been in the business for 30 years and have a very broad product offering and a very broad blue chip customer base.''
