Youlu - with all due respect - the notion that PMC execs need to listen to your advice is one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. Nothing you said in that VTSS post is news to me or certainly not PMC. IP and ATM are converging, and IP with MPLS, DiffServ and RSVP are becoming more ATM like and ATM switches are all starting to include SONET interfaces and MPOA interfaces to switch/route any protocol that comes along. There is no doubt an evolution is occurring to an IP centric telco network - as long as IP can improve enough to offer CBR service and match ATM QoS to IP CoS. Believe me, this is NOT news to PMC and although I don't know for sure, you can bet the 24% of revs being spent on R&D (a HUGE number that has its roots in customer demands) is going towards this vision. Are you familiar with PMC's huge selling PoS Spectra? Did you know PMC has other chips in CSCO's GSR 12000 - one of the key parts to the Packet over Sonet network? Did you know that ATM only comprises 40% of revs and will become less as other products ramp? No one doubts GE in the LAN - and it will be a force in the WAN and backbone as well. But ATM has a long life - especially as you point out - in the backbone, and as a conduit for FR and xDSL. 70% of carrier traffic is transported as CBR traffic over ATM at some point in the backbone. That will not go away soon. Plus even fully IP centric new carriers like Qwest, Level 3 and Frontier, let alone Sprint and Bell Atlantic, are spending huge amounts of dollars on ATM networks to offer business services to corps all over America. And contrary to your assertion, imho, GaAs, while a better conductor, will never reach the ubiquity of silicon. Silicon Germanium has been proven to be more efficient than Ga and may have a better chance. When you originally posted that statement about PMC's ATM mkt share, you posted it as if it was a fact. I challenged you on it and you eventually said "well - i just have a feeling". That is NOT a contribution to the thread - no one cares how you FEEL - bring facts or don't bring anything at all.
