Thanks Robert. I've dealt with independent operators such as you've described on an operating level in the past. It's been a while, though.

Several things pop into my mind, one of which is can they stay current with the state of the art? (I'm not referring to fixed wireless that delivers voice plus 64 kbps per passed home... I'm referring to something more substantive that can be afforded by all pops in an area.) And, do these same smaller independents have cable operators crossing their paths in their serving areas who perhaps can deliver better payload sizes for 'net access and work at home.

On the financial side, I would imagine that amortizing the costs of a wireless operation by a new entrant in these areas to satisfy a total replacement is not as cheap as one would imagine at first glance, especially if they are going to be offering their own end office switching and LD tandem connects.

Interested in hearing more views on this. Regards, Frank C.
