Kevin,

I got a Hauppage WinTV model 401 last night. $79.95 at CompUSA. I've had nothing but trouble installing the board. None of these problems has anything to do with Wavetop; it looks like my Adaptec 2930B SCSI board is sharing interrupt 11 with the WinTV board and I've got to try to get the interrupts adjusted. I think that's going to be the only problem, but it is a nuisance. I'm sure the USB port uses interrupt(s), maybe I can disable them. After all these years you'd think the interrupt and memory address issues would have been improved!!!!

I've learned a lot about this technology just by working through the trouble. For anyone about to purchase a WinTV board, I'd recommend the Hauppuage even though I've had trouble getting it to work. My PC is pretty loaded and I never believe Microsoft when they said PnP was going to make PC hardware easy anyway. I plan on hooking my CATV to the input, rather than an external antenna.

Some issues:
**** IF YOU ARE GETTING A NEW PC, GET THE TUNER CARD INSTALLED WITH THE PC SO YOU CAN SPEND MORE TIME USING THE PC AND LESS TIME TROUBLESHOOTING !!! ****

a) If you have an S3-based video board, there are problems with WinTV. Check with the board manufacturer for compatability.

b) Install the latest version of DirectX drivers. If you have Windows 98, I believe it automatically installs version 5 it not present already; 6 is current.

c) Install WinTV first, then Wavetop, then WebTV for Windows. I've read in several places that WebTV is VERY picky about VGA boards.

Since I'm not to Wavetop yet, I thought the above might be useful. The problems I've had involve my particular computer (a Compaq Pentium with the aforementioned Adaptec SCSI adapter). I have to check to see if the Adaptec-2930B is a PlugNPlay board; supposedly Win98 can support multiple PnP boards at the same interrupt, but I never liked that idea.

Round 2 of getting the Hauppuage board to work starts this evening. My next PC's is going to have the tuner board already installed.

Dave

Kevin,

One more thing; I'm going to remove the Adaptec 2930B SCSI board, remove the Hauppage board and WinTV/Wincast drivers in Win98, then let Win98 figure the Hauppauge interrupt without the SCSI board. USB ports, sound cards and SCSI adapters can use up interrupts quickly.

The only thing I use the SCSI board for is the scanner, but I still need it!

Regards,
Dave

Kevin,
From what I can tell, the Adaptec 2930 is not PnP but the 2940 is. First thing I'll do is remove that Adaptec and get the Hauppauge board working, since it is PnP. Then I'll get Wavetop working and finally the Adaptec (if possible!). I don't mind springing for a Adaptec 2940, I can use the 2930 on a different PC.

I hope no one minds me posting this under the Wavephore folder; I'd send this private but these are issues that anyone could face and it might help.

Dave

Kevin,

Well, Adaptec doesn't provide a lot of support anymore for the 2930B. I have no doubt that card's the cause of my trouble.
