LSI Logic Storage Systems Selects HP'S
TACHYON TL Fibre Channel Controller IC
for Future-Generation Storage Controllers
10:58 a.m. Nov 30, 1998 Eastern

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1998--
Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that LSI Logic
Storage Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of world-class,
high-performance RAID storage subsystems, has selected HP's
TACHYON TL Fibre Channel controller for future-generation
storage controllers.

"In 1995, we brought to market the first RAID storage system
with a Fibre Channel host interface using the HP TACHYON
Fibre Channel controller," said Tom Georgens, president of LSI
Logic Storage Systems, Inc. "We share a common goal with HP
to provide high-performance Fibre Channel solutions that offer
superior interoperability. The combination of HP's
industry-leading Fibre Channel controllers and our
industry-leading storage controller architectures enables us to
satisfy the needs of the market for higher-capacity, faster and
more reliable storage solutions."

"LSI and HP are pioneers in the development of Fibre Channel
solutions," said Julian Elliott, manager of HP's High Speed I/O
Products business unit. "We are delighted that LSI has chosen to
extend its alliance with HP to deliver next-generation Fibre
Channel storage solutions." TACHYON TL Benefits

TACHYON TL is optimized for mass-storage applications,
including host-bus adapter cards and storage subsystems. It is
FC-AL-2 compliant, supports Class 3 and Class 2 ACK_0
services, is capable of simultaneous initiator and target
functionality, and operates in both private and public loops.

TACHYON TL is capable of attaching directly to a fabric in
N-port mode, a feature that sets TACHYON TL apart from
competing controllers.

TACHYON TL delivers leading-edge performance. In recent
testing, it achieved more than 31,000 I/Os per second, the highest
I/O rate achieved to date by any Fibre Channel protocol
controller. Its high-performance features include fully automated
SCSI command processing; full duplex support with
simultaneous inbound and outbound frame processing; and
multiple inbound sequence support, which delivers up to three
times the performance of competing controllers in switched
environments.

TACHYON TL is highly interoperable, leveraging the mature, de
facto standard TACHYON architecture, used by more than 50
OEM suppliers of Fibre Channel solutions, and Compaq's PCI
architecture, used in Compaq computers.

Because TACHYON TL does not require companion SRAM, it
can be used to implement solutions that are more cost-effective
because they use fewer components and occupy less board area.
