PCs Not Discounted in Tokyo at Year-End, Nikkei PC Says

November 26, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Personal computer prices appear to be stable, according to a Nov. 14 survey conducted by Nikkei Personal Computing on retail prices of PCs at major computer stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Year-end sales models have been introduced by major PC manufacturers. And many shoppers in Tokyo's Akihabara and Shinjuku areas are already browsing PC retail stores equipped with the latest catalogs.

Desktop models with low-price microprocessors such as the Intel Celeron or the AMD K6-2 are expected to be popular. Prices start around 180,000 yen (US$1,480) including a CRT display.

IBM Japan Ltd.'s Aptiva D1J, which features an original "IBM 300" microprocessor, is priced at 148,000 yen (US$1,220) with Word and Excel pre-installed. It is expected to be a popular model for business use or as a second computer at home or in an office.

Prices of desktop PCs with LCD monitors also are being reduced.

Among them are NEC's ValueStar NX VC30H/5XD2 (64MB main memory, 4.3GB HDD) with a 14.1-in. TFT-LCD and Celeron 300AMHz microprocessor, which is priced at around 248,000 yen (US$2,040); as well as Fujitsu Ltd.'s FMV-DESKPOWER CVIII30L (64MB main memory, 4.3GB HDD) with a 15-in. TFT-LCD monitor and K6-2 300MHz microprocessor, which is priced at about 278,000 yen (US$2,285).

Desktop PCs with LCD monitors are now available in the mid price range, making them more affordable and popular.

As for notebook PCs, the A4-size all-in-one type with a modem and business software listed for 200,000 yen to 250,000 yen are among the popular models..........
