I know this has been discussed some time before on the thread in some respects but I am looking for a way to hedge against market declines using my big winning stocks. I would never short except against the box, using the profit to reduce margin and to avoid paying capital gains tax on some of my big winners. Obviously, I realize there is a short-term capital gain (or loss) on the short transaction, itself.

I want to know exactly how selling short against the box works. I know you sell the stock, pay the regular commission of a sell, take the money and put it in your brokerage account, pay any dividends to the one from whom you borrow the stock. But I would like a really good and thorough explanation of how it all works from a procedural and cost standpoint from beginning to end: What the costs are, when the buy side of the transaction has to be closed, etc.

LG, DON, Trey, Stephen, per Don's major internuts stalling, how is this going affect the second and third tier internuts plays which have been catching wild fire and there seems no stopping it. Like BAMM AMEN CDWI. It also seems they are going to be fueled on Monday when MALL's IPO of UBID becomes public (MerilleLynch being the underwriter). This could be the IPO of the century and its potential could be mirrored in the price movementof the MALL the last few days. It will be priced at 14-16. but may gap up at 50 and reach an intraday high of 100+. Gosh, nuts!!!

My question: if the big market turns next week (possibly), would it affect the momemtum of the internet sector seen here and now?

Hello LG.

So apparently you are very keen on NAVR? Can you expound as to why?

If this is question is not appropriate for this thread, please direct me....

ps, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am finding SI very hard to access today, yet I can access everything else just fine. Have not seen this before in my memory. This tells me that tomorrow could be a very HUGE day....

Best of luck to us all....
