When the grand universities ceased to believe, they passed their sepsis of unbelief down the hierarchy of learning, from theologians to clerics. At first these new ideas became fashionable among the educated, a sign of being ahead socially and intellectually. Gradually, other sheep wandered into these wasteland of emptied meaning in a general "falling away" which is now the state of much of Christianity's former bastion, Europe. The church in the United States, all evidence would indicate, is not far behind. The first leg of the story begins in the late eighteenth century and runs through the whole of the nineteenth, and is mainly a story of German New Testament scholarship, beginning with Herman Reimaru's work, published posthumously in 1778, was a skeptical account, the first that tried to separate Jesus' words from those supposedly given to Him by His disciples.Reimarus gave birth to the idea that there was a true "historical" Jesus hidden somewhere behind the layers of tradition and theology in the New Testament documents. The quest to find the historical Jesus had begun. The quest originally assumed that the true Jesus was person whose real life and message were obscured by later theological encroachments of the church. Bultmann and those who follow him, assume that the true "Jesus" is the dynamic creation of the church, which bears, perhaps, only an incidental likeness to the Jesus of Nazareth, a first century Jew about whom not much can be known. _______ _______ The Cosmic Christ Matthew Fox a most influential New Ager acknowledges that Jesus died on the cross. However, ignoring all biblical evidence to the contrary he explains Jesus' death not in terms of the substitutionary atonement but in terms of His so-called stand against patriarchal religion. Jesus died at the hands of men...just as mother earth is dying at the hands of a patriarchal civilization gone mad with its attraction to matricide. Both Jesus and mother earth appear to be victims of the same pathology. In Fox's theology, the Cosmic Christ is a divine presence that permeates all of creation. The term "cosmic" refers to that which is related to the whole universe. Fox believes the Cosmic Christ is present in all of Creation. ____________ ____________ The New Christ of Paganism Feminist witch Miriam Starhawk asserts that feminism is the strongest mythogenic (myth-creating) force at work today. Many in the West have failed to address this attack on Christianity; now it is almost too late. Another feminist puts it more forcefully "The feminist movement in Western culture is engaged in the slow execution of Christ and Jaweh...the gods who have stolen our women's identity...We women are going to bring and end to God. The godess Sophia, worshiped by liberal women from mainline churches (most of whom were not self-confessed witches), was the new "re-imagined" Christ. Communicants received pagan sacred elements of milk and honey. Christa-the goddess of feminist deconstruction, lesbian love, and sinful play-now often replaces Christ the Lamb of God bearing the sins of the world in His body on the tree.
