>>Deloit & Touche's Cherbak said that while online retailing did not pose an immediate threat to traditional merchants, it is a trend they must heed.

''If you're not involved in Internet retailing and you are a a big retail chain, you'd better get on the train or you're going to be left at the station,'' he said.

''There's always going to be that contingent that wants to go and smell and feel the merchandise, but if there's a more efficient, more accommodating (shopping) method, which I think the Internet provides for a lot of different retail categories, Internet retailing is going to do nothing but proliferate.''<<

U.S. online retailers helped by good weather too

By Gregory Crawford

CHICAGO, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Brick and mortar retailers in the U.S. were happy that much of the country was bathed in sunshine on Friday, drawing hoards of shoppers to their stores, but online retailers were benefiting from the good weather also.

''Right now, would you rather fight the traffic to the mall or take 20 minutes and be finished,'' said Stewart Spiegel, vice president and general manager of iQVC, the online service of home shopping network QVC.
