I have owned SUNW since April of 1995, and it has been an eight-bagger for me.

What should I do??

-Alex

Alex, I'm in the exact same position (portfolios over 50% SUNW) at a cost average in the $20 range. There are more than a few of us on this thread whom have somehow, over 3+ years, made it to this point without being shaken out.

I know I'm feeling a little taller today, but I look down at the PE and do feel a little vertigo.

There is more going on though than just a 'discovery' of SUNW by the street. Among other things, Sun is about to break into a new business phase (consumer revenue stream), and is doing so with outstanding advantage.

Although the current financial fundamentals may not warrant today's stock price, the BUSINESS fundamentals (the story) is *so compelling as to be as clear for future revenue as the sky is blue.

I don't know about you but I've always considered my otherwise large SUNW position to contain a certain diversity within itself. I kept coming back to SUNW every time I went shopping for a best idea. Although I'm no longer buying SUNW, neither will I be selling SUNW. That 'best idea' of three years ago, remains for me, the 'best idea' today. To me, the only thing fundamentally changed in my SUNW position is increased visible upside.

Congratulations fellow longs-

JCJ

Adding to what JC said, there are a number of things to keep in mind before you jump the boat and sell any or all of your shares of SUNW. Actually, what I am going to suggest would hold for any stock in which you have a profit on paper.

Personally, I *never* let my decision to sell anything be influenced by its having appreciated a lot, the idea of selling merely to lock in a gain. One, the primary reason for not doing this, is because I buy for the long term and do not trade.

In term of SUNW, I am not going to sell any of my shares because I think SUNW is well positioned for the future, both intermediate and long term. I like the management, products, and think SUNW has carved a niche for itself where it will be hard for it to be displaced. SUNW has a vision I think it has the ability to attain. If you, Alex have concerns with any of the areas I just mentioned, then maybe you should consider selling some of your shares.

Also, if you think you are going to get upset and possibly have a knee jerk reaction and decide to sell [just to lock in some gains] if/when SUNW has a price corrections down the line, consider selling some shares now. All stocks have corrections, which present people who want the stock in their portfolios buying opportunities. Corrections also panic some people who have big gains and not enough investment experience to focus on the reasons for the correction [normal taking of profits, some by traders; market in general in a down phase due to any of numerous reasons; etc.].

Probably the most important consideration to sell though Alex is how SUNW fits in with your investment objectives. From the little you shared, it sounds as if SUNW right now is not the kind of company you normally hold in your portfolio: an unknown company to consumers with a low PEG. It seems that the percentage of your portfolio SUNW now represents bothers you.

Weigh your tax liabilities, sit down and have a drink [non-alcoholic for this], and decide how _you_ will feel the most comfortable in various scenarios, assuming both selling and not selling shares for each. We all have our individual pain thresholds and investing is as much psychology as hard figures.

One tip, Alex, it is my personal policy to never look back when I sell something. I do not even check the price for something once it is out of my portfolio.

The best of luck making this difficult decision-

Lynn

alex, question is :WHY would some one buy SUNW at this price. Is sunw presenting a value to sane buyers ? maybe some one can add to this.
question is not... should i hold my stock? On friday, why did sunw move up more then aol, amzn, yahoo ? why did cpq and dell end up negatiave when NAZ is up 31? how much did intc move? WHY didn't sunw pull back at the end of day?

internet stocks are bot by small folks trying to make a living. Sunw is bot by big mutualfunds. They are not trading they are accumlating the stock. Some fundmanagers probabably do not even understand and are jumping in. CASH is pouring in and they are forced to invest.

now compare the pe of msft, csco, dell, ibm, intc, hwp etc...
and compare the earning growth rate. i have done my homework.

msft is at 60+pe checkout zack estimated erning for msft 99 and 2000.
they are less then sunw. Look at the difference in technology what sunw and msft are offering ! This could just one of many announcements to follow. If you do your home work you will find sunw still the best price.

pull back will come but it will be sharp and fast
the stock has not rested but every dip will be bot by people who
who badly need to get into their stock.

if by the end of year sunw is not on tech fundmanager's top 10 list
he is not going to look good.
intel has had negative earnign year over year.
hwp has missed 7 out of 10-12 qurters.
ibm has earning growth of 7-8% but PE is high even dell is better priced then ibm.

Mrkt is moving from PC to servers. (see chart of ibm vs. dell)
sunw has come up w. consistent double digit growth.
Market as a whole (s&P500) earning coming down. Mrkt PE is very hi.
compare to sunw pe given sunw growth.

if u r scaraed by puts but don't jump in front of a moving train.
that is called commiting suicide
after 3yrs of holding the stock
i hope u don't bail out when it's your time to live.

Apparently Sun's weakness today was due in part to a Sun announcement that revenues are being delayed as customers wait for new systems to come to market.

fnews.yahoo.com

Seems like a good, ultimately innocuous, excuse for a little breather.
