ruedog, very enlighting post! As a sharehold it's never great for your company to save mony by not inovating for a long time. I too was enjoying how MSFT was getting away w. everything.

but finally tech company's value is in their happy R&D staff.

MSFT has opened an office in india? to develop unix. This is great.
great minds, cheap labor. Bill Gates is welcomed like a hero overthere. Technology makes it possible to develop SW across the ocen as if it was done right here.

Bill Gates has learned plenty from IBM's mistake and I think we are on our way to being an inovative company again.

Also as a share holder it is not a good idea see monopoly in your company. Competition makes the company inovate. Monopoly makes the company lazy (thus a room for some one else to come along). 90-100% marketshare means you can only loose market share.
e.g. AMD if goes from having 5% market share to 10% market share it has doubled the market share. Intel was sleeping just a little while and AMD made room for himself in the low end.
