very difficult to answer without writing a book

short version

for a day trade just looking for a reversal off a bottom, a runner to catch a piece, or a break up over some resistance level

for a short position trade
usually a buy stop to catch a trend change
or, a buy stop just above short term resistance

for a hold, usually a fundamentally strong stock that has based out
