" What I'm saying is, if you don't have the time and desire to delve a little into your computer, then yes, you are probably better off calling in the consultant or taking it to the shop"

Well, as long as he knows somewhat what the programs are on his computer, and what programs he doesn't need, he can't do any damage as long as he uses "Add/Remove Programs" in his control panel, can he? Especially if he just goes thru and deletes programs like the CAD programs he knows he doesn't want. Just deleting a few unused programs thru "Add/Remove Programs" could free up a bunch of disk space and shouldn't risk crashing his system as long as he's not deleting stuff he doesn't recognize.

I feel the same way .....I love to know what makes things tick and found myself on the phone with gateway fixing things . I finally took someones advise and purchased Clean Sweep ( there are other programs that probably do the same job)and I haven't made a mistake it couldn't fix. The key is everything that gets deleted , you are recommended to let it make a condensed archive file . That way when you find something not working it will put it back .After 30 days it asks you if you want to delete the back up. The program finds lost and redundant files, out of date bits and pieces left over from deleted files and tons more . I bought a Gateway with 200 mhz, 2.5 gig hd ,64 ram and I am running out of space in just 18 months.I just cleaned house this morning and deleted over 75 mb with no problems and can dump much more but I am waiting for a week to make sure I didn't trash anything important. There are allot of files you can zip and put them on a floppy...like graphics or things you want to keep but don't use much.I use win.zip6.0 and it lets you save more then the 1.44 mb that the floppy will store. I have some single files spread over 3 discs. I wish I had an Iomega drive with those 100 mb discs. I used to be known to my friends as the Big D....for deleting so much...you can get into tons of trouble but I learned allot just as Wily said......have fun making room just be careful.
PS:
Most people have tons of wasted programs that came with there pc but don't use much but still have the cd.......why not uninstall them , you can reinstall if you want it some day.I had games,Encarta, greeting card,Trip maker and on and on .........I rarely use these so There gone and I still have the cd if I want to use them.

I accidentally erased my back-up drive the other day by formatting it. (Life is hard when you don't have a brain). I haven't written over it yet. I've heard there's software for "unformatting" and recovering the files. Anyone know about this?

Thanks,
wily
