nimingdn & others, MSFT took off right after NSCP-AOL's deal was announced. It could also be the follow-through after the options expiration. In any case, people see different things about this deal. I think the main reason Case wanted from the deal is to improve his AOL browser to be more suitable with standards, while at the same time he wanted to sell NSCP's servers business to SUNW which was not stupid enough to accept the deal. If ever SUNW or ORCL have the guts to kill MSFT, why do they just buy NSCP, AAPL or NOVL? So, out of the deal, AOL stuck 300 mln w/ SUNW's machines, while next year is really the year of Windows 2000, and AOL also need to do the major upgrade for DSL. Case is a mean businessman and will do anything to keep AOL going. Like many mergers such CCI-TRV and CPQ-DEC, you have to give sometime to both players to settle each other. Case will use NSCP's manpower to re-create AOL's software which might be only useful to AOL's users, and the servers business might be left wide open for MSFT. I am sure for those who bought NSCP's softwares are in NSCP's shoe too. Like what Case said, this is just beginning for people to link each other. Soon, we will talk & see each other, not write to, and I am sure none of us know what AOL is doing. We still need to check YHOO though. DELL is still looking good. There are some problems though: 1) DELL is not performing this quarter, so far, while other POS might be doubled, 2) people might be nervous about next quarter. Nobody can say anything for sure. 3) This might be more important that the top-line machines they are selling are below $2000. (PII450 w/ DVD for $1850) And there is no new faster chips to raise ASP. With the new DSL modem, I think this may be the final machine which will last for a long time. It must be really tough for them right now.
