Christine, browsing this thread, I came upon your reference to Israel Shahak, which seems to assume that Shahak is a Holocaust denier. He is not. The misappropriation of pieces of his work by American fascists is a truly horrifying development. When Shahak refers to the treatment of the Holocaust in Israeli education, and to the "myth" of the Holocaust as he sees it, he is referring to the suppression of information regarding the degree of collaboration, by Jews and other victim groups, that did exist. In the letter of Shahak's that you provided the link to, he is clearly arguing for a realistic and historically sophisticated attitude toward the measures developed in the Palestinian resistance toward persons regarded as traitors. Shahak is a humanitarian activist, and he sees justice in many of the claims of the Palestinians, and is making the point that demonization of them for killing their collaborators comes with ill grace from survivors of events like the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. That's all. He should certainly not be put in the same pot with the Holocaust deniers! E's h. Christine, I'm just read the article, and am pasting below the last couple of paragraphs, which make clear Shahak's point. -- E.It is clear that such events were not exclusive to the Jews, the entire Nazi success in easy and continued rule over millions of people stemmed from the subtle and diabolical use of collaborators, who did most of the dirty work for them. But does anybody now know about this ? This, and not what is 'instilled' was the reality. Of the Yad Vashem (official state Holocaust museum in Jerusalem - Ed.) theatre, I do not wish to speak, at all. It, and its vile exploiting, such as honouring South Africa collaborators with the Nazis are truly beneath contempt. Therefore, if we knew a little of the truth about the Holocaust, we would at least understand (with or without agreeing) why the Palestinians are now eliminating their collaborators. That is the only means they have if they wish to continue to struggle against our limb-breaking regime. ("our limb-breaking regime " refers to Shahak's dismay at the official position of the Israeli authorities that physical punishment in interrogation and in riot suppression were allowable under the law.)
