<For those who follow Jesus death is abolished for them already because we have become spiritually alive. We are translated from death into life.> Okay, well, are you asserting that there is an actual afterlife in Heaven, or that spiritual aliveness is something inside the individual? If it is the former, can you offer any proof? Has anyone really come back from the other side? Why cannot all religious beliefs simply be within the individual, with no external reality? There are some of Jesus' quotes from the Gospel of Thomas which seem to indicate that this is the way he perceived them. Incidentally, I believe that death entered the world at the same time that life did--they are intertwined. Curiosity about the forbidden may have killed the cat, but it is a strong impulse in our life force, and I have always been puzzled personally about why so many people want to worship such a dictatorial and punitive God image. And the Garden of Eden mythology takes the complexity of humanity--we all have light and dark in our beings--and squeezes all the compelling dichotomy out. It makes me think that people who worship Christ are afraid of their negative impulses, feeling out of control, and want simple answers and iron-clad rules. I am just not that kind of a person, Bob, although I am sure it must be reassuring to have such readily available answers. Thanks for asking about my Thanksgiving. It was not so good! For reasons beyond my control, my little family was stranded in Laguna Beach, California, where we stumbled into a historic hotel and ended up paying $160 for a nouvelle cuisine concept of turkey and dressing. Let's just say that the turkey was RARE, and that sprinkling a bunch of chewy, inedible chestnuts on top of mashed potatoes which have been perfectly piped into a spiral, chunks of unadulterated yams al dente, and cranberry sauce presented in a crispy fried wonton skin ramekin, finished off with a tablespoon of pretentious pumpkin mousse dolloped into a house-prepared shell of dark chocolate, is not my idea of Turkey day. But I hope you and your family enjoyed yours!
