Christine,

Hmmm.... I did smoke a good deal of the heathen devil weed in my youth, and I'm reasonably content with the state of my brain. I imagine tequila does as much damage, though I was once rather fond of that as well. Marijuana gives a much better morning after, though. For the rest of it, I'm no sure that the causative relationship is as clear as some might like to believe. Kids at the stage of rebellion often smoke dope. Their grades often go down, but is this because of the dope, or is it another symptom of their entry into the age of rebellion?

The kids that go from grass to coke... how much of that transition is assisted by the fact that they have to descend into the underworld - to some small extent - to get the grass? How many of them would, in the absence of grass, have gone straight to coke.

If it weren't for the legal issues - meaning if we are thinking solely of physical/mental health - I'd rather see a teenager smoking grass than drinking. I'm sure that my kids will eventually try both, and I'm sure I'll feel very different about it then.

;-)
