Are you really having goose for Christmas, Bob? Isn't goose pretty fatty, and aren't geese smart and sensitive? And they mate for life? I have trouble eating monogamous animals.

Don't feel guilty about your own Thanksgiving just because mine sucked. Everyone has good and bad holidays, for many reasons. I am determined to make Christmas much more pleasant, for example. I don't know if I will cook a turkey, but I am quite sure I will never try nouvelle cuisine again.

The experience did not end so badly, however. We went back to where we were staying, baked a Sara Lee pumpkin pie, and had it warm with vanilla ice cream later that night. It was surprisingly nurturing, in an emotional sense. And we watched the Holly Hunter movie, "Home for the Holidays" on video, and cried at the end. If anyone has not watched this movie, I strongly recommend it, for all of the tangled emotions most of us experience at this time of year.
