For the most part the review was accurate. With respect to
performance for NetWare 5 over IP being slower than IPX when doing 256 byte reads, this is more a limitation of the TCP protocol than
NetWare. TCP is a windowing protocol. 256 bytes is less than the
MTU size for ethernet which is 1514 bytes. In other words the overhead in using TCP (guaranteed delivery, acks, checksumming) for small reads is greater than using IPX (no guaranteed delivery, no acks, or no checksumming). In our testing you can expect a 5% hit in performance just due to checksumming of data which doesn't happen by default for IPX. Its only when using larger read sizes i.e. 8K for 10Mbit, and 16K for 100Mbit where TCP begins to distance itself from IPX. Anyway just wanted to sit the record straight that this is the cost of using the internet standard TCP that small reads will suffer in performance compared to IPX and has nothing to do with NetWare 5.
