I'm not really making any argument at all, as it's a subject on which I'm fairly ambivalent, and I haven't really studied it. But I started smoking at about 14, though the saturation phase, for practical reasons, didn't start until much later. I also dropped out of college for a brief career in political activism, followed by a Peace Corps term and a good long 3rd world wallow that would make Henry Miller blush. Yes, I removed myself from the career fast track, and I will never be President. I have occasionally wondered what I could have become If I hadn't gone off the deep end, but I've never really regretted any of it.

The question: would it be hypocritical for me to try to maneuver my children onto a more respectable track than the one I chose? So far it's not an issue (eldest is 8), but I really wonder how I will react when it becomes one. Although it may not - I've noticed that kids from eccentric backgrounds often stick straighter to the line than their parents.

Opinions?
