Roadmax, That's a pretty big block of shares, $638K at Friday's close. So your friend has a lot of money. If he sold Dell without showing much gain, he didn't hold it very long, so he's probably a short term player looking for upward momentum, but without the risk level of the I-Nuts. Microsoft definitely has more short term momentum than Dell; for the last 20 trading sessions, msft is up 20% while dell is down 2%. But msft is also facing some uncertainties: the doj action and the new aol/nscp + sunw alliance. Your co-worker may just time himself into a fine short term profit. Longer term, I like Dell. Both of them are in my portfolio.

I suggest you follow your rich friend's lead; if you're going to take golf lessons, make sure you pick a pro who can score.

Frank

Far better to look at your own past investments and try to improve. Friends in the past have advised me to buy Cuban-American Sugar( before Castro),DeBeers, Nichols Institute, Mexican phone company stock.
oil speculators.
Long term do you think it will be easier for Msft to double and achieve a market cap of $681 Bil, or for Dell to double and achieve a market cap of 176 bil or less due to buy-backs another 240 mil shares.?
Short term its tough to decide, Dell is ready to move up ( check
what happens to Dell price after low volume days on Dell Aug 13, Sep18,Oct 18,and Nov 8) but Msft is likely to declare a split.
Long term its Dell.
