Hi Ramsey,

My stay in China was only limited to ShenZhen, DongGuan, and GuangZhou. These are all southern coastal cities in China. As you know, the coastal regions are the most well developed areas in China.

China's economic situations are different from region to region. Certain regions consist of mostly privately held businesses, while other regions may be more concentrated of government businesses. The areas with mostly private business are doing alright. GuangDong province would be such an example. On the other hand, the north eastern provinces in Manchuria (spell??) are doing very poor. Government enterprises such as steel factories are laying off people in masses. Some of these factories are laying off people because they don't have money to pay workers, some others are laying off people to increase profit.

The companies that I work for deals with both private and government ran companies in China. When I was in China this last time, I dealt with two private businesses. They were amazingly well ran. They knew what product they want to ship and they worked hard at completing it; they work 11+ hour days, and they only have 2 day offs every month. On the other hand, a co-worker of my worked with one of the PLA ran companies. His experience was very different. Employees worked relaxing 40 hour weeks, and for the 2 weeks that my co-worker was there, this company never even got the hardware ready, so this software engineer spent two weeks there doing nothing.

Great structural changes are taking place in China. At this moment, "people based government" is what's needed in China. Though it is a very tough situation, Zhu is fearlessly implementing rules in China. As we are speaking, Zhu is going after the military ran company that I talked about in the last paragraph for tax fraud. China is a big country with big problems. It may take 2 or 3 decades for China to fix its economic/financial problems, but I think China is moving in the right direction. I don't think that China would ever be like the US due to cultural differences, but I hope, in 20 years, China can have a system similar to what Taiwan has today.
