The pieces of a high-quality internet store:

1) The content

DISK is the leading independent distributor of DVDs with a large # of exclusives. It also is *the* laserdisc distributor and distributes DTS audio and some video.

2) The warehousing

Las Vegas warehouse is brand new, automated, and geared towards electronic ordering. It is right next to major airport.

3) The front-end

DISK will be acquiring www.kencranes.com. It has already done a reasonable amount of business and the web site look just got upgraded.

4) Information for front-end

Here is a piece which was kind of neglected in the past. I've been waiting to see if something came of it. Basically, Muze founder was appointed on DISK's board. Here is an extract of the press release:

"Trev Huxley is co-founder and Executive Vice President for Business Development of Muze(R) and is a member of its Board of Directors. Since Muze's(R) founding in 1990, Mr. Huxley has helped the Company to become the leading independent source of digital information about music, books and movies, by furnishing the core elements that drive entertainment commerce for chain, independent and online stores. Muze(R) provides in-depth and original content for in-store kiosks and on-line web sites for a who's who of online and traditional music, book and video retailers including: Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Blockbuster, Borders Group, Camelot Music, CDNow, Columbia House, HMV, Music Boulevard, Tower Records, Virgin Mega Stores and others.

Martin Greenwald continued, ''We are thrilled to add Trev Huxley, an experienced and prestigious force in the new media and entertainment information industries, to our Board. His diverse and extensive experience in Internet entertainment commerce will be a tremendous asset as Image continues to focus on the growth opportunities of electronic commerce and DVD. We are truly fortunate to benefit from his knowledge and expertise in these areas. Trev and Muze(R) are renowned and respected in the Internet community as technology innovators and standard setters.''

Trev Huxley commented, ''Image has always been a leader. The Company's long and successful history in software distribution is well documented. I welcome the opportunity to join Image and to participate in its entry into the dynamic world of Internet commerce.''

Muze's(R) in-store information systems for music, books and movies, and its advanced digital audio previewing technology can be found in over 14,000 retail locations nationwide. Recently, Muze(R) has leveraged its position as a respected independent authority for entertainment-based information with best-of-breed databases and web technology to offer customizable, searchable and integrated solutions to its traditional and online customers.

Muze(R) is a closely held corporation, controlled by majority owners John W. Kluge, Stuart Subotnick and partners in the privately held Metromedia Company. John W. Kluge and Stuart Subotnick, through Image Investors Co., are also the largest shareholders of Image Entertainment, Inc. "

If you are Kluge & Subotnick and own all the pieces for a world-class internet store of entertainment media, would you not try to bring the pieces together? I think the odds are pretty good that if kencranes.com deal is finalized, it gets upgraded using content from Muze to become much more informational like Amazon.com.
