Does anyone know what .chk files are?

In my C:\ directory I now have about 70 of these files. They are all named File0000.chk, File0001.chk, etc. They didn't use to be there, and I've no idea where they're coming from. I've copied them into a seperate folder and they amount to about 6MB.

Along the same lines, several other files keep showing up in my C:\ directory, most of which didn't use to be there, many of them logs (Log, Dilog, Bootlog, Detlog, etc) or .log (Install.log, Scandisk.log, etc). Would anyone know if these can go? How about anything with a .old?

Most of these files are small (1 to 10KB), so it's just more along the lines of trying to clean up the folders rather than gaining disk space. Since I've now got about 100 of these files showing up that didn't use to be there, I'm assuming that most can probably be deleted, and whatever put them there in the first place will rewrite them if it wants to.

I would just put all these into a junk folder, but if any then prevented Windows95 from booting, I'd be in trouble if I had to try and remember DOS.

PS I've also been told that Windows95 doesn't need any autoexec files. Does anyone know if it is safe to delete the autoexec files from the C:\ directory?

JW i hope for you have a big hdd and the guy for whom your /msg
was directed too ...

your advice to dump <*.tmp,*.bak,cache,icache> etc. into recycle bin
sounds ok , but in windows reality you may end up with a big problem and/or not working computer at all ...

i don't know if you are aware that recycle bin has some limitations
---- the size of recycle bin is % setting and can be changed to what ever # of % you like ( i belive that a default is 5% of the drive size ) if you are after increase of the hdd capacity logical thing is to lower a space % for recycle bin but if you do that then you can't dump everything into recycle bin , the capacity is to small
AND WINDOWS DON'T TELL YOU THAT ...
that is the point where the witches circle closes on you -- more stuff you dump into full recycle bin , more stuff you are dumping into a cyber chimney with a good filling that nothing can happen because you have everything stored in recycle bin ...

trust me it is a very pain full experience to send something to recycle bin either on the purpose or by a mistake when the bin is full.
bin there, done that ... 8-))

just my 2 cents
