Sunw is a big supporter of linux and it can not harm solaris (os that is light years ahead).
I respectfully disagree. Sun is providing token support for Linux, and Solaris is not only not light years ahead, it is behind on many performance measures as well as reliability.

About the only advantage that Solaris has is on the big systems (10000 etc) - which is kind of like saying VMS has an advantage on the VAX or MVS has an advantage on S390.

Sun has a lot to worry about from Linux - it could demolish their low end business which would reduce the app base for solaris. Linux doesn't have to replace solaris - it just has to reduce the volume in the low end and midrange. That's why Sun has been working to shore up SCO and also to get traction as 'the' 64 bit Unix (kind of hard when DEC Unix has been there for 6 years, but Sun is doing a decent marketing job despite serious technical shortcomings).
