Compaq Desktop Supplies -- Percent Of Resellers Citing
Each Level
John Roberts

In contrast to other major vendors such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard, a higher
percentage of resellers reported shortages of Compaq desktops in October.

The 24-percent figure was above the 20 percent reading for IBM, and 15
percent for HP. Only Apple recorded a higher shortage figure last month, at 33
percent. Compared with year-earlier figures, however, Compaq has improved
its channel supply situation. In October 1997, 37 percent of resellers reported
Compaq desktop shortages, 13 percentage points higher than last month's level.

Elwood and all: I am a bit surprised at estimate of .25 and .36 There is no indication that I have seen that it will be below .37 and the company is comfortable with that figure. Realistically .37 should be the base for estimates. My estimate of .41 was posted a couple of weeks before Piper Jaffrey estimated .42 after they had met with management. I think the whisper number will be between .40 and .42, but I will not be surprised if results are .43 and .44,

rudedog has given a much more informed caveat for not assuming all DEC's previous revenues and margins will transfer over. I noted that DEC was rumoured to have lost hundreds of clients nervous about the CPQ takeover, before the merger was consummated. On the other hand let us remember that DEC was accretive even for the two weeks which counted for the June quarter and saved that quarter from being expressed as a loss.
