Chinese DVD productions lines are ready, but idle...................asiansources.com Outlook '99: Mainland China DVD players on verge of mass output China's DVD industry developed at quite a rapid pace in 1998, closely resembling the initial build-up period of the VCD industry several years ago. There are other parallels between these two segments, as well, since many of the same players are involved. Some large overseas VCD player manufacturers are reportedly setting up joint ventures on mainland China to manufacture DVD players, hoping to offset their losses in the VCD player market. In addition, according to incomplete statistics, there are at least 10 local companies with the ability to produce DVD players or drives, or that have already begun batch production. At the end of last year, China's major DVD player manufacturers were uncertain when they would be able to launch volume production, as they lacked the final specifications for the DVD standard and the market appeared to be expanding very slowly. However, most are confident that these problems will be resolved, and it is widely believed that DVD player output by mainland China companies will become substantial over the next two years. The Zhenjiang Jiangkui Group Co., for instance, plans to build its annual capacity to 300,000 units this year, boosting it to 800,000 to 1 million units in the year 2000, according to sales manager Ye-tao Jin. In general, DVD players on the market now are very similar in form and function. Common features include MPEG-2 coding and decoding, CD and VCD software compatibility, a playing time of 130 to 135 minutes, a resolution of 500 horizontal TV lines and support for PAL/NTSC signals. In addition, the latest players support 16:9 and 4:3 TV aspect ratios, and HDTV and PC/TV compatibility.
