Funk, as mentioned previously, I and several others have had no cooling problems with only the celeron 300a's boxed HS/fan. Provided that your case has reasonably good ventilation (I use the In-Winn Q500 full tower, other good choices include Super-Micro and Asus full towers,) this should be more than adequate.

Good luck,

Dave

funk,

I'll parrot the "no problem" on the 300a cooling. I got mine with the intel factory on-chip heatsink and fan ... it is fine @450mhz. Only exceeds room temp by 5 or 10 degrees F.

I am currently mildly concerned with the temp of my video card. An ATI AGP all-in-1der heats up to 120 degrees F. Not real hot, but seems to be the hotest item in my case. With all slots occupied, any cooling solution begins with removing the PCI card closest to the AGP card. So right now am doing nothing about it.

Hey Funk
Whaddya think? overkill?

I'm not the most experienced oc'er here, I hope those people will chime in. The consensus here is that if your only going to 450mhz the boxed 300a cooling will suffice. If your going to try for higher speeds, with increased risk of heat related damage to cpu, vid,hdd than better cooling solutions may be advisable. heatsink-guide.com is a good cooling only site for serious oc'ing.

If this is for your trading machine I would say go to 450 with the included heatsink on the 300a and keep on eye on your cpu temps with a hardwaremonitor just so you know
whats going on temp wise. I don't think trying to push the limits with your daily workhorse is advisable.

Then again for successful traders such as yourself where money is not a problem<gg> you can't overcool so the celeron sandwich my be overkill but not overcool <g>

There are vendors who sell bundles of memory/ mb/ cpu with added third party cooling ....pcnut.com is one. This may be the way to go if you want to keep shipping costs down. And their bundles are proven reliable and appropriate packages.

Noticed a folder on Anands General BBS Where is that?

anandtech.net

Ok general hardware review site.... excellent technology articles....popular BBS

also look at....http://www.tomshardware.com/ and bxboards.pair.com

That CPU cooler is very cool, (pun intended) but overkill IMHO. As you may have read in my previous posts I am running a boxed 300a at 504 (112 x 4.5) without any heat problems at all. Temps never go over 93-94 degrees. I have used several OEM and boxed Celerons, and never had trouble with any of them. But I used big well ventilated boxes, don't put the covers on them sometimes, and they are in air conditioned environments.
I think if you had a partially restricted airflow case and put it in a hotter than normal environment, then I could see the need for a better cooler.

Good Luck
Dan
