" the majority of people in America are two pay cheques away from homelessness"

The median net worth in the US isn't much more than $US1000 as per a recent article in the Journal of Economic Perspectives.

Stephen,
There is no "real measure" to factually know whether the US financial
dynamics is technically about to collapse. The perspectives of some
individuals and their rhetoric could seem convincing. Some statistics
and facts do point in that direction.....i.e.: 2 wage earners are now needed to
meet the daily demands of maintaining a middle class life style and the less
fortunate are not meeting those demands comfortably even with 2 earners
at poverty level wages.

Also....just published is a study that shows Americans are -2% below their
wage and savings levels for the year. A estimate that points towards the
fact that many are borrowing more then they are earn too keep ahead or
invest in the stock market. [just 2 examples]

There are many other such statistics and studies to draw upon.

But keep in mind these figures and any others that might come to your
attention are “in and of themselves” not indicators that the USA's system
of monetary balances is about to crumble. This is not the case. Our
economy is stronge and the future demand for what we produce and provide
is also very stronge world wide.

That is not to say the worlds financial systems cannot implode from over
leverage or that unforeseen events like LTCM won't stress the USA system,
but it is not about to collapse.

Bio-regionalism and environmental disfunctioning happens all over the
world of industrial man. Russia has one of the worst possible records
in environmental protection. Whether we follow Russia into chaos will
not be determined by the "mess" our own habits and needs have made of
our environment. But there is plenty of evidence that the "Rate of Burn"
of the earths natural resources cannot be kept up indefinately and new
sources of energy and waste disposal need to be invented and forced on
the governmental burocracies.

This thread is a wonderful example of sharing information and intuitions
about the future of financial instruments....maybe the diversity here will
alert all of its readers to the potential Big Kahuna Down Wave before it comes..?
Good Luck
