To All,

I am not a Visio shareholder, but wished I had purchased when the stock had hit its low. I am however, an owner of IntelliCad which is of course the low cost clone of AutoCad R14. The retail street price is approx. $349.00. If you are a previous owner of any version AutoCad, AutoCad Lt., or TurboCad you can switch to IntelliCad for approx $149.00 (currently an additional $20.00 rebate is being offered by the mfgr. price = $129.00).

I wish I had some idea of the number of seats they are selling as compared to their anticipated projections. Last I heard they had sold approx 12,500 seats.

I read the white papers and also the reviews prior to purchasing the product (I purchased the upgrade offer). It was the intent of the developers not to make a better product than AutoCad R14, but to make a Clone of Autocad R14. Approximate retail street price of AutoCad R14 is $2800-$3500. The target user by Visio from what I have read is any type of design houses which have one legal copy of AutoCad but no additional copies for the other design seats in the house. IntelliCad is to work seamlessly (Almost) with the AutoCad product. The other market is to be the foreign user which does not want to pay the high price for AutoCad but will pay the $350.00 for IntelliCad.

My impression as a user of IntelliCad vs AutoCad is very good. You get a tremendous amount of power vs low cost. It does read and write native .dwg format. You can program the toolbars to make the program identical to AutoCad. The main problem that I am having with the program is IntelliCad's inability to handle the complex linetype. I have been told by tech support that the issue is to be addressed in a later release. I repeat the program is very similar to AutoCad. A very good clone. There are however, some other issues that have to be resolved. I hope they continue their endeavor with a low cost clone product.

I am concerned by the fact that Intellicad is offering a $20.00 rebate for the upgrade version. Is the product not selling well? At those low prices it does not seem that there is a lot of money involved.

I have one question for Autodesk. Why are you charging so much money for your product?
