Allies Set Pact On 3G Phones

Five global standards bodies will meet in Copenhagen Friday to form a Third Generation Partnership Project that will pursue common standards for third-generation cell phones based on the GSM switching and radio-access technologies the five bodies support. The group includes the European Telecommunication Standards Institute, the U.S. T1 standards committee of ANSI and standards groups from Japan and South Korea. The pact appears to be a way to sidestep Qualcomm Inc.'s claim to Code Division Multiple Access air-interface rights.

Maurice I must correct your History. Though Pearl Harbour hastened the public's opinion to join the war, and we did. The fact that The United States was about to join was inevitabe. FDR was mearly looking for an event to sway public opinion. Though I will admit that there were practical reason's to enter the war. As you mentioned we needed to protect a big debtor to many US companies, as well as protect are geographic interest's. However the United States has always been a country of ideal's and idealist's. In WW1 we fought to make "the world safe for democracy" and for "peace in our time". In WWII we also fealt we were fighting against evil, and attempting to rebuild the world system. Though these were not the only reason's, it is a big part of our national psyche.
