Egghead.com's new site brings together the Web businesses previously operated under www.egghead.com, www.surplusdirect.com and www.surplusauction.com. The new site will offer separate buying venues comprised of virtual superstores, surplus liquidations and multiple auctions. "This is the most significant step the company has taken since closure of the retail stores and the migration of our business to the Internet," Chairman and CEO George Orban said. "The new site, based on Oracle technology, will allow the company to grow its core PC products business and improve customer service performance while adding entirely new product categories to our offer." Key Web site features include: -- An easily navigable, highly integrated shopping environment; -- Color-coding identifying all shopping venues as part of an efficient navigation system allowing a customer to shop for many different kinds of merchandise; -- A dynamic, modular format which presents customers with changing merchandise displays and promotions; -- Reduced download time through efficient use of HTML and minimal use of heavy graphics; -- Well-organized and logically presented product information giving customers the information necessary to make buying decisions; -- Advanced search functionality enabling shoppers to quickly find a desired product; and -- Improved customer service features that are accessible from every page which allow users to quickly find answers to questions and to track the status of orders via email. The new www.egghead.com initially will offer four separate buying venues including virtual superstores and auctions: Egghead Computer; Egghead Software; Egghead SurplusDirect and Egghead Auctions. The Egghead Computer superstore will offer a wide range of the newest computer hardware, peripherals and related merchandise. The Egghead Software superstore will sell a large assortment of the newest productivity and consumer titles. Software products will be available in packaged form or through electronic software distribution (ESD). Egghead SurplusDirect will feature many categories of off-price and liquidation merchandise. Egghead Auctions will conduct multiple, simultaneous live auctions of many categories of products including hardware, software and non-PC merchandise such as sporting goods, consumer electronics, small household appliances and jewelry. The new Web site also will allow Egghead.com to expand into entirely new product categories. In tests, it has demonstrated the scalability to serve as many as 20 million page views per day and process 10,000 orders per day. "We believe that the new site will enable Egghead.com to increase merchandise revenues, improve the management of gross margin, expand into new product categories, add revenue from advertising, and lower our operating expense ratios," Orban said. "The new Egghead.com supports multiple sources of distribution including our own distribution center, EDI links to national distributors and our proprietary interface to vendors who cannot support EDI but wish to post offers on our Web site and fulfill orders directly to our customers." The launch of the new Web site is being supported by the company's first off-line advertising campaign, including television, magazine, and newspaper advertising. The new campaign, using the theme, "Shop three times smarter," supplements the company's on-line advertising program. The new Web site runs on the Oracle computing platform, which addresses Egghead.com's demand for greater speed and scalability. The Oracle Internet computing platform includes the powerful Oracle database and Oracle Application Server, Oracle Internet Commerce Server and Oracle Applications. Egghead.com is the only national retailer to move its entire business to the Internet. Earlier this year, the company closed its remaining 83 stores. In its second fiscal quarter ending September 26, 1998, the company reported more than 20 million unique visitors to its Web sites, and revenues of $35 million, an increase of 19 percent over the previous quarter, and 73 percent on a pro-forma basis over the comparable period last year.
