Monday November 30, 7:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release The Box Music Network and ACTV To Explore Enhanced Programming More Pioneering Efforts for 'Viewer-Controlled' Music Programming NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1998-- TCI Music's The Box Music Network (NASDAQ: TUNE - news, TUNEP - news) and ACTV (NASDAQ: IATV - news) today announced that the two companies will collaborate on an enhanced version of viewer-controlled music programming.
Using ACTV's proprietary programming technology, The Box Music Network will evaluate consumers' responses to interactive concert programming. The ACTV system allows viewers to switch seamlessly between multiple feeds of video, audio and data in real time.
''It's all about added value,'' said Sharon H. Brown, Executive Vice President of Programming and Marketing for TCI Music. ''We can give viewers the best four seats in the house, if that's what they want.''
While sporting events have a successful track record in the event PPV business, live concerts and musical events have not delivered consistent or predictable results. The Box Music Network and ACTV believe giving the viewer control over the experience might drive viewer satisfaction and take rates.
''We're talking about a demographic that grew up with video games, with CD- Roms,'' said Brown. ''These are kids who expect to control their entertainment environment. With ACTV's technology, they can focus on a particular band member, get artist bios, read song lyrics -- they can create their own personalized music video experience.''
ACTV uses patented software technologies to create Individualized Television , which takes traditional television programming into the digital age. Using a standard digital set-top box and remote control, a viewer can switch between the regular programming feed and a multitude of personal options and features. The proprietary software remembers all viewer responses and commands, enabling the delivery of individually tailored television programming and advertising content to an unlimited number of viewers.
''We're always exploring new ways to bring control and personalization to our audience,'' said Alan McGlade, CEO of The Box Music Network. ''For example, our web site (www.thebox.com) just launched on-line ordering capability. You can now preview a music video and order it from our Web site, and watch it play on the broadest broadband pipe of them all -- your television.''
By evaluating its audience's desire to interact with music programming, The Box Music Network is preparing for new program concepts for the future.
''We were the first music network to launch a package of channels for the digital tier -- the six-channel Box Set, which has been reaching customers for over a year,'' McGlade explained. ''Now, we want to expand our understanding of the benefits inherent in digital technology. The ACTV platform could bring us a new way to entertain our audience.''
The Box Music Network pioneered viewer-controlled music television and is the world's first and only fully interactive channel. The channel boasts one of the highest concentrations of PPV users of any basic cable network. The network capitalizes on this concentration to benefit cable operators by using music videos from movie soundtracks to promote PPV titles during their PPV windows.
''We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with The Box Music Network,'' said David Reese, President, ACTV Entertainment. ''Our association with Liberty Media will allow us to extend our programming opportunities beyond sports. Working together with The Box Music Network, we hope to provide cable operators with valuable programming which will serve as a source of incremental revenue, while offering advertisers one of the most powerful addressable media vehicles for an increasingly fragmented environment.''
ACTV and The Box Music Network will preview an enhanced version of a concert performance at the Western Cable Show in Anaheim Dec. 1-4 (ACTV Booth 3262, Hall C). The concert will feature acclaimed blues and rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Shepherd has released a pair of best-selling records on Revolution/Warner Bros. Records. Two songs will be optimized for the demonstration, ''Somewhere, Somehow, Someway'' and ''Everything is Broken.'' Viewing options will include the main concert program, ''Kenny Cam'' (a constant ''iso'' shot of Shepherd), ''Mr. Crane'' (a constant ''iso'' shot from a crane camera), and a biography and artist information stream.
''We're intrigued by the possibility to take concert programming to a new level,'' said John Beug, Senior Vice President of Film/Video for Warner Bros. Records, Inc. ''Our artists are always looking for new ways to reach out and interact with their audiences, and this test will put a new twist on how we've viewed TV as a medium.''
The Box Music Network is the only interactive, 24-hour all music network currently reaching more than 55 million households worldwide. The Box Music Network (www.thebox.com) presents the newest and most diverse selection of music on television through the use of 130 digital file servers throughout the U.S. The Box Music Network is available in the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim.
The Box Music Network originates programming uniquely tailored to each market it serves. Viewers have the option to call in and request a video from a menu of up to 200 selections, with the charges (average $1.99 per video) appearing on their phone bill. Viewers can also simply watch the videos and BOX programming free of charge.
A number of artists have credited The Box Music Network for successfully launching and solidifying their careers. Artists who have recently acknowledged The Box Music Network as key to their success include The Backstreet Boys, Fuel, K.P. & Envyi, She Moves, and Dakota Moon.
The Box Music Network was the first music service to launch a variety of themed music channels designed specifically for the next generation of digital cable. Marketed under The Box Set brand, these services are available on TCI's Headend In The Sky (HITS) and are strategically packaged with other programming services targeted to specific audiences. BOX SET channels currently include Box Edge, Box Pulse, Box Classic, Box Urban, Box Exitos, and Box Tejano.
TCI Music, Inc. -- The Box Music Network, DMX, and SonicNet -- is a diversified music entertainment company delivering audio and video music services to commercial and residential customers and is traded on the NASDAQ SmallCap Market through its TCI Music Series A Common Stock and Series A Convertible Preferred Stock under the symbols TUNE and TUNEP respectively.
Based in New York City, ACTV Inc. uses patented software technologies to create state-of-the-art programming for the emerging digital television and Internet platforms. ACTV Entertainment and ACTV Net are subsidiaries of ACTV, Inc. ACTV Entertainment and Liberty Media formed a joint venture, LMC/IATV Events, earlier this year.
