Compaq Receives SAP 1998 Award of
Excellence and Award of Achievement
Leading Retailer, PETsMART, Chooses Compaq Hardware and Services for
SAP R/3 Implementation
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1998--One of the industry's leading hardware providers for
SAP solutions, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ - news) today announced it has received
two distinguished SAP awards, the 1998 Award of Excellence and 1998 Award of Achievement.
Compaq is the only vendor to win both of these awards this year. Compaq earned these awards for
achieving excellent customer satisfaction ratings with customers running SAP(tm) R/3(tm) on Compaq
ProLiant Servers and Compaq AlphaServers. In addition, Compaq also announced that it has been
selected by PETsMART, the world's largest retailer of pet food, supplies and services, to provide a
UNIX-based hardware and services solution in one of the largest implementations of SAP R/3 for Retail
to date.
The SAP 1998 Award of Excellence honors the U.S.-based SAP partners that score above a designated
threshold in the SAP annual customer satisfaction survey. In addition to earning this distinction,
Compaq also received the SAP 1998 Award of Achievement in appreciation for its collaboration with
SAP, Microsoft and Arthur Andersen to create and promote SAP Accelerated Solutions(tm). SAP
Accelerated Solutions are designed to provide the middle market customer with the ability to realize the
benefits of the world's leading Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions more quickly and
through cost-effective and risk-free approaches.

Compaq platforms support 30 percent of all SAP R/3 worldwide implementations in 1998 and 58 percent
of the North America Windows NT-based implementations.
For over five years, Compaq and SAP have worked together to test and optimize SAP applications on
Compaq's industry-leading servers. In addition to Compaq's SAP Competency Centers located around
the world, including Houston, Tokyo, Japan; and Munich and Walldorf, Germany, Compaq also
collaborates with SAP and its channel partners to develop new programs and best practices designed to
ease implementation of SAP solutions and reduce operating costs.
Compaq Wins Big In Retail
When PETsMART, the world's largest retailer of pet food, supplies and services, required a business
partner that could deliver a successful SAP for Retail solution on a UNIX platform to support its growing
base of 432 stores in North America, it looked to Compaq. With plans to add 50 stores per year,
PETsMART needed a solution provider that could deliver a plan to accommodate this growth. Compaq
provided hardware, including seven 8000-class Compaq AlphaServers, as well as the appropriate SAP
and consulting services PETsMART required. Compaq tailored its offering to meet the specific needs
PETsMART had to ensure efficient implementation of SAP for Retail.
