NOVELL: Harvey Nash recruits Novell to build European network

NOV 30, 1998, M2 Communications - Leading IT recruitment services group Harvey Nash Group Plc is underpinning its expanding European network with Novell technology. The company has undertaken a project to roll out Novell NetWare, Novell GroupWise, Novell BorderManager and Novell ManageWise across its six offices across Europe at a cost of GBP 70,000.

Novell BorderManager will be used to establish a virtual private network (VPN) between London and its European sites to provide a cost-effective means of intra-company communication. Novell GroupWise is being used for internal and external email and for remote access Novell GroupWise WebAccess is used by employees working off-site.

Novell NetWare replaces the company's NT servers. Geoff Dunn, Harvey Nash's IT director, explained that after experiencing NT first hand, Novell NetWare was the best choice for the new network: "NetWare offered us a scaleable solution with NDS as a common thread, which is a real advantage for a rapidly growing company. We felt that the cost of ownership for NT would be much higher and would offer less scalability and functionality in comparison to NetWare."

In conjunction with Novell ManageWise, NDS is providing Harvey Nash with an easy to use, single point of administration for its entire network. Novell Application Launcher is used to download applications to workstations and administrators can now launch applications to the desktop remotely.

"NDS and ManageWise have significantly reduced the cost of network ownership for us," added Dunn. "We can now manage all our European sites from London using NDS which is a big advantage as some offices simply don't have the technical resources to do it locally."

In addition to the virtual private network, Novell BorderManager is being used for proxy caching and IP filtering on the network. Dunn explained the advantages: "Many consultants use the Internet for researching companies, and in many cases the same web sites are accessed again and again. BorderManager enables us to avoid double hits and dramatically speeds up research time which has produced real productivity gains."

For the future, Harvey Nash is looking to develop an intranet and also plan to evaluate Novell NetWare 5.

Let me take a break here and post part of a dispatch from the trenches I just got on the mail..

Wrong! Dispatches from the Front: A
Bull's Time-Out

Here we go. The bearish rap on the tube. One day, one
&%^#&^#^# day that we go down, and the bears jump out of
their cages and do a jig! Give me a break. The most bullish
thing that could happen is a pullback. If we didn't get one I
would be convinced this whole move really was just a short
squeeze. ....................
