We have several portfolios: each have 2 with online brokers (ROTH IRA & I have a margin acct; he has a reg. acct.) plus several others. Our primary jt holdings are in DRIPs & (for me, at least) very conservative. We just have different investment viewpoints & widely divergent abilities to handle risk. So that in general, our entire holdings are fairly well diversified, but taking advantage of each of our "investment styles" to maximize our wealth. (FYI, we took a portfolio mgmt class together a few years ago. Guess who won, err got the best grade?)
