Do you view the unconfirmed rumor [that TPII has to hire 12-15 programmers by the end of Dec] as good or bad news? I am not sure how to take it: good that they have an increase in customers (I assume) or potentially bad (can they find the kind of programmers they need by then?).

Must hire by Dec 31?

Why?, he wonders to himself.

[... pause while contemplating ...]

Aha!, he exclaims aloud, scaring the dog out of its wits.

So the hiring bonus can be expensed in 1998 instead of 1999!

Of course!, he chortles, pleased with his detectoring abilities.

[... zzzzz ... goes the dog, as it dozes off again]

Hmmmm ... but hiring ANYBODY in December is tough, he thinks aloud, re-awakening the now annoyed dog. He watches as the dog slinks out of the room, looking for a quieter place to nap.

Nope, the tax thing can't be it, he thinks. The bonus usually isn't paid until after 3 months of employment. That would make it next year.

So, why before the end of December?

Perhaps the people are needed for a contract starting in January of 1999? TPI could then train the people that they will hire during December. Then, they'd be proficient in January on the tools that TPI selects to use on the contract. But, who's going to train them? Aren't the existing TPI employees going to take their vacation time?

But, wait ... this is just a rumor about the needed hiring.

He turns off his computer, scratches his head thoughtfully, then forgets the whole thing because it is totally irrelevant to his situation.
