I am not a guru in this field - like George is.

Geeze, I'm not even a very good USER of AIX, much less a guru <GG>.

I'm a hardware guy doing PowerPC chips, and as such, I don't want ANY Unix to succeed on Intel! <GG> (BTW rudedog, to address one of your earlier comments, I think you DO have a PowerPC in your car if you own a new Ford)

Toy, it is true that AIX has been ported to S390, but I suspect the volume of actual users is tiny compared to the number of customers running MVS or VM on those machines. Also, its come up here a couple times before, but S390 uses the 360 architecture for its chips and I would have to imagine could not even consider changing to PowerPC due to the cost of porting all the ancient software apps not to mention VM,MVS. This would be a Y2K type expense. Its much cheaper overall to just continue to do custom chip sets for the 360 architecture. Emulation is not an option either when so many billions of dollars are riding on every pico-second of performance. So, in terms of processors, the chipset sharing scheme works for AS400 and RS6000, who have both gone to PowerPC, but doesn't extend to the 390 or Intel servers. I/O subsystems and Power/Packaging/Cooling areas would be the places that will probably receive the most attention in terms of common parts across the entire server line.

As for AIX, no reason to have a hypothetical discussion about phasing it out since as I said before its currently being beefed up.
