I don't know about investment clubs. The borrowing arrangements are trading houses where the trader comes in with a $50,000 cash investment and he is allowed to trade say $250,000 in stocks by borrowing cash at the end of the day from lenders as arranged by the trading house.

I understand the SEC is looking into these because the traders in many cases are not registered and the "arrangement" seems to be skirting the law a little too close.
