WDFC also has a good yield at 4.4%. Too bad I'm out of cash for the kiddy account.

Anyone have any thoughts on LRW?

I've been short for a while, but I don't see it returning to reality any time soon.

My fear is that the moment I cover, it will crash.

<TMRT> Coming up on the radar screen?

Excerpts from an article in today's Orange County Register:

2TheMart.com surprises even its president with 700% gain

"It's part of the Internet craze."

"Most new investors seem to have bought the company's stock solely on its news releases, in which it promises to launch a new person-to-person auction Web site within the next six months."

"2TheMart.com now boasts a market value of $330 million, despite the fact that it has no product, revenue or earnings."

"The dramatic stock surge has not prompted any inquiries from federal stock regulators, Magliarditi (president) said."

The article should be available on the Web tomorrow.

Regards,

Amit

I have been shorting overvalued stocks for the last couple of months with pretty good success. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative to my current Online broker (DATEK). My main problem is that 2/3 of the stocks I have tried to short in the past have been Non-Marginable or Non-Shortable. I noticed that you were able to get short positions in some of these and maybe you could point me to a different broker. By the way, I came across your name on the OMGA board on YHOO which I was shorting at the end of the day (OMGA that is, not YHOO!).

Thanks
Bob

Is it me or does anyone else feel this market is looking for an excuse to go down? Not that I have been making the best picks lately, feels like I couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a bass fiddle for the last week. Been giving myself high fives when I nick a teenie off of a 2K trade. Need a good short that I can get at H20house.

Anthony, Matt or anyone,

I've been trying to sign up for the new website but my browser doesn't have the proper security certificates, and the phone number on the sign up sheet doesn't get me to any official sounding establishment. Please send me a PM with another phone number so that I can call my credit card info in and get into the new site.

TIA

Amit

Dear Anthony,

I've been investing my and my family's money for the last ten years, more or less, since I graduated from college. To date, my investing perspective has been essentially that of a long term investor. During the last couple years, the size of my portfolio has swollen from the strength of the bull market and the outstanding performance of many of my long positions, and I am coming to the realization that I can and should begin to leverage my asset base by engaging in more speculative activities to a limited extent for both pleasure and diversification, buying and selling on margin to begin with and then eventually options trading.

Now that I have set my brokerage accounts up for margin trading, I still find myself thinking with the mentality of a "long" when considering how I might margin myself. Having owned more than a hundred companies over the past decade focused in half a dozen various industry groups and having looked at many times that amount in a serious way, I think that I ought to be able to identify losers as a natural extension of the skills I have honed in identifying winners. However true this may be intellectually, I'm finding it unexpectedly difficult to change gears psychologically. I'd be interested to know what your first short sale was like, if you were willing to share your memories, in the hopes I might learn from your experience and would welcome any other SI members willing to share their reminiscences as well. And anyone, please feel free to offer whatever advice you might be will to bestow upon me as I try to grow as an investor.

I've been following the discussion on this thread since early in the year and am impressed by the very high success rate your short sales have had. You perform a great service as a watchdog of the public interest.

Sincerely,
Puck

At its recent 1166, the S&P yielded about 1.2%. Were its yield to quadruple to 4.8% - and its been higher that that in the past - the S&P would drop to about 300. Interestingly, the S&P now trades at over three times revenues, six times book value and 75 times dividends. These figures are well above peaks seen at previous bull-market tops, and illustrate just how overvalued the S&P 500 is now!!!!!!
