"Two of Europe's largest drug makers,Hoechst of Germany and Rhone-Poulenc of France, are close to announcing a merger of their pharmaceutical and agrochemical operations. Details of the annoucement were expected to be released at a news conference Tuesday in Strasbourg, France. Local reports said the new company would be called Avantis and will be based in Strasbourg. With annual sales of around $20 billion, the new company will be tied for No. 1 ranking with Switzerland's Novartis in the life-sciences sector." USA Today
